Close Encounters of the Third 3rd Kind 2 Two 2nd ii Second

During the entire career of Steven Spielberg, it is still rare for Steven Spielberg to direct a follow up sequel to some of his most popular movies. For more than 30 (thirty) years, Steven Spielberg has produced only one prequel (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) to any of his motion pictures. The only new sequel films Steven Spielberg has created, based on his previous movies, are the three classic Indiana Jones prequel and sequels and The Lost World Jurassic Park 2.

The most notable Steven Spielberg trademark film with no sequel is ET The Extraterrestrial. Some have argued that the ET film was the sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind or the closest Steven Spielberg would get to Close Encounters 2. However, other Steven Spielberg box office mega hits like Jaws, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report, Catch Me If You Can, War of the Worlds and others have no sequel or prequel movie directed by Steven Spielberg.

With careful consideration, it doesn't seem Steven Spielberg has ever found a story for Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind 2, which he believes is worth filming. With Close Encounters, the ET movie and War of the Worlds, Steven Spielberg has already produced three extraterrestrial alien based films. It's notable that Steven Spielberg has created three follow up movies for Indiana Jones, but that's mainly out of loyalty and being extremely close friends with George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

When Steven Spielberg was hired by George Lucas to direct Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Steven Spielberg readily realized that it would be a multi film commitment because Lucasfilm has few money profit generating ideas so George Lucas desperately needed for Steven Spielberg to create multiple Indiana Jones motion pictures. George Lucas even tried to expand Young Indiana Jones as a TV television series show, which didn't succeed in the end.

However, it is probably too late for Steven Spielberg to consider making Close Encounters Two now. It's been over 30 years since the 1977 cinematic theatrical release date of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. There probably won't be a Close Encounters 2 until after the Close Encounters intellectual property rights enter the public domain in the far distant future.
