For reasons we may never be able to fathom, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind is the only Steven Spielberg movie, which has Steven Spielberg as the only writer and director for the motion picture. In most cases, Steven Spielberg doesn't create the story ideas for his most popular films. However, the Close Encounters movie is the only exception.
Steven Spielberg thought up the plot script idea for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and actually wrote the script screenplay for Close Encounters. Additionally, Steven Spielberg served as the movie director of the first Close Encounters.
Thirty years later, we don't really know if Steven Spielberg would control both the writing and directing of Close Encounters 2. Most of Steven Spielberg's massive box office hits were written by third party professional script writers.
It's usually not a good concept for multi billionaires to write screenplays for high budget block buster movies no matter what the conditions.
